Face book and You Tube Execs at MIPCOM 08

October 14th, 2008

I am currently in my hotel an MIPCOM in Cannes which is a trade show for film tv DVD and new media distributors and buyers from around the world with over 12,000 delegates from more than 120 countries.

I have been coming here for more than a dozen years, and it seems for more than half of them the idea of an internet based business modelfor marketing and delivering filmed product, has been touted as right around the corner.

Tomorrow, Chad Hurley, CEO of YouTube is speaking to this largely TV congregation of content professionals.  There appears to me some traction this time…rights for digital delivery are being negotiated now with dollars and projections, not promises of finding a way to monetize as the net matures…its gotta have many traditional TV players a bit nervous as their ad rates continue to slide…

The following day will be a talk by a senior official at FACEBOOK, so to say the least, the social networking sites and video sites understand (probably much better than anyone here) that quality content will undoubtedly grow in importance online and that there is a way for content owners to move into this space, if they understand some of the rules of engagement online….more to follow after the talks.
Dan Shannon, from Cannes France.
